She moved to Los Angeles, California in 1946 to attend the University of Southern California where she received a Bachelor's degree in Art in 1950. She worked as an Airline stewardess and newspaper reporter from 1950 until 1953 when she met budding songwriter, Robert B. Sherman whom she would marry on September 27, 1953. Joyce and Robert were married for 48 years and had four children together including Laurie (b. 1955), [[Jeffrey C. Sherman|Jeffrey]] (b. 1957), Andrea (b. 1960) and [[Robert J. Sherman]] (b. 1968).
